Do A Sponsored Hike/Bike Ride For Charity

When I first started to look into organising this task, I got quite elated at how many different avenues I could go down. I could walk the Great Wall of China, cycle through Egypt or even climb Kilimanjaro. Unfortunately, elation soon turned to despondency, when I found out that each of these required a minimum of a couple of thousand pounds in sponsorship and raising that sort of money, would be a whole new task in itself. So, I was in the local library one day, when I came across a leaflet to climb Ben Nevis. Mmmm, looks challenging I thought, but again the charity concerned wanted a couple of hundred pounds in minimum sponsorship. About this time, my cousin developed cancer and it seemed quite fitting that I do something for a cancer charity. So, after googling Ben Nevis, I came across 'The Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge' for Marie Curie and it seemed to fit just right. Not only would I be raising money for a charity that would go to something that had affected my family, it also only required a minimum of £100 sponsorship.

So sponsors were gained, kit was purchased, I got fit (ish!) and managed to lose a stone in weight and all too soon the climb was here and I was in Scotland.

Husband accompanied me and my sister to the Ben Nevis Inn at the foot of the mountain for registration and then cheerfully waved us off, as we began our epic journey. Although a fairly warm day at 9am, the heat never bothered me, neither did my back pack that weighed a ton and made me resemble a pack horse, as I had my waterproof jacket and walking sticks protruding from the back of it. What did bother me was the sheer scale of what was in front of me.

We followed the traditional 'Ben path' - a mountain track from lower Glen Nevis to the summit. The hill distance is approx. 5 miles and reaches the summit area by huge zig-zags up the western face of the mountain. Yes, they tell you all that before you start climbing the mountain, but what they don't tell you is how steep these huge zig-zags are and how the traditional 'Ben path', is nothing more than a pile of rubble in most parts, that you have to watch every step you take over it, for fear of losing your footing and falling off the side. It was horrendous. I wanted to curl up into a ball and cry, I seriously don't know how I got through the first two hours. Every corner I seemed to turn, had another steep, rubble incline that seemed to go on for ever.

I don't know if it was the thought of a previous trek the day before, that had reached the top in wheelchairs, or the fact that I was doing this for my cousin, that had passed away, but for some reason, I got through the pain barrier and I began to almost enjoy it. I'd given up trying to keep up with the very fit and fast, front runners of our group and I was quite happy to plod along at my own pace, especially when I got to a very nice stretch of smooth path, that felt like I was walking on carpet, compared to the rougher terrain, I had just experienced.

The amount of energy I was using to gain any sort of distance was unreal. I was also eating at almost every stop, as my body was crying out to restore any energy levels it could, to carry me through all this.

As we approached the summit, the path seemed to get even steeper and never ending, with the added bonus of snow, covering an incline, which made any sort of determined effort to reach the top quickly, almost impossible. Through another rubble incline and round another path of snow and then, there it was - I'd reached the summit. There stood the ruins of the old observatory and the war memorial. I took the obligatory 'I've reached the top of Ben Nevis' picture and ate the rest of my lunch and all too soon we were on our way again (if you rest too long, your muscles will seize up) and at quite a determined pace as well.

This will be easier going down, I told myself and in some ways it was. You weren't having to clamber up steep uneven paths, just unfortunately having to descend down them. It wasn't until we were going down the mountain, that I realised just how steep the paths were, or what we had achieved that morning. Unfortunately because of this, it had taken every ounce of my strength and I had very little to give. As more and more people passed us going down (very impatient some of them as well, almost stepping on your heels, before you had the chance to move out of the way) we took our time. To climb over every stone, seemed to take for ever, but we finally arrived back at base at 6:15pm, bruised, battered, in alot of pain and shell shocked!

Now a couple of days after the event, the pain is subsiding. I can actually, nearly walk properly today (the pain in my legs meant I had to hobble around previously) and it's starting to sink in, what I have actually achieved. This, was certainly the most challenging task I've completed so far and perhaps, will be one of the hardest ones that I will have to do. But do you know what, I've done it now, I climbed Ben Nevis, all 4,406ft of it and raised £600 for Marie Curie cancer care in the process.

Getting Ready For Ben Nevis

I had a productive day yesterday, as I managed to get the majority of stuff for my Ben Nevis Climb. I now just need to get a few more things to aid with my climb and some surgical spirits (apparently you have to bathe your feet in it for 20 mins a day and then moisturise your feet and it prevents blisters??!) I'm now at the stressing about doing it stage, which I'm sure will pass, but it doesn't help when I have a busy week ahead of me at work and only six days to go before I leave for Scotland.

Gulp - last week of training coming up, let's hope I survive in time for next Sunday!

Getting On With It

It's half ten on Thursday night and I've still got a million and one things to do before I go away tomorrow. List wise, this week has been quite a productive one. I've trained every day this week, doing at least an hours worth of exercise a day. I've booked the accommodation for my Ben Nevis trip, which I have to admit was a little skeptical that I would get in any where. Not only is there a big charity event the day before my climb, there also appears to be a motorbike event as well that weekend (apparently a big thing in that area??!) But it's done and dusted now, so that's the main thing.
I just need a few more things to take with me for the climb and see if I can rustle up a few more sponsors and then hopefully, come June 1st, that will be another task ticked off my list. I also need to book my Ferrari day, which I think I will do after the Ben Nevis climb and that's it for stuff in the pipeline. Not quite sure what direction to go next with my task list. Obviously my novel is ongoing at the moment, but I fancy taking on a whole new different challenge. Watch this space....

Beyond Boundaries

I was left speechless last night after watching this -
beyond boundaries. Ten young disabled people are attempting to cross Ecuador and the Andes with the help of Ken Hames. An unbelievable situation to put yourself through, even more so when some of the people taking part are reliant on wheelchairs or have lost limbs. I feel amazingly humble, especially when I think of how my able bodied self has been twittering on for the past couple of months on how I'm going to survive climbing Ben Nevis. What these people have endured whilst completing this expedition can only be described as heroic, but this bravery is only a small part of what they must go through, on a day to day basis in today's society. So, I will carry on with my training and hope that I can find at least a small part of the strength that these individuals have portrayed on this programme, in order to complete my expedition on June 1st.

I'm Falling Behind.....

Not felt that great this week since having a dodgy veggie burger on Tuesday (yes apparently there is such a thing!), so my training schedule has fell well behind. I've also got a load of things to get organised for my task list. I still have stuff to buy for the climb, accommodation to book, my drive in a Ferrari to book and I need to seriously think about Africa and how I'm going to organise it. On a good note, my hubbie has rearranged his DB9 day, so that means he will accompany me to the Ben Nevis climb and at least take the pressure off myself having to drive all the way there and back. But, a week tomorrow I will be on holiday (no idea where - it's a surprise!), so if I get most of the above organised before I go, I will be a happy bunny.

A Spanner In The Works.....

When I signed up for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge, I definitely didn't think it through properly. Of course, I knew that I would need a certain standard of fitness and have attempted to do that, losing a stone in weight in the process. But I didn't think of all the stuff that I would need to purchase, not being of the mountaineering sort before I volunteered for this. I also didn't think of the logistics of getting to Ben Nevis - a seven hour drive from where I live, which would mean an over night stay the night before. Then there is the day's worth of climbing, followed by a seven hour drive back home - not practical and even may not be feasible after the climb, which would mean another over night stay. I had thought as far as hubbie would come with me, to hopefully share the driving and make sure that I arrive and depart from Ben Nevis safely (sometimes I need looking after in such matters!). Unfortunately hubbie went and booked his DB9 experience day, the day before I'm due to do the climb - in fairness I had neglected to tell him the exact date I was attempting to do this - a minor error on my part you would say. But, I can't lose sight of why I'm doing this. My cousin had a very painful six months of treatment, before he eventually died of cancer, aged just 34 and it's the thought of doing this for my cousin that means I will carry on and somehow get all the stuff I need, find the way to Ben Nevis and hopefully complete the mountain challenge. Cross everything for me.

Today I'm......

Hunting for accommodation for when I do my Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge
Totalling up my sponsorship monies (£270 + cash match)
Working out what I need to buy (fleece, waterproofs, maps, survival bag)
Thinking I must be a nutter to have voluntered to do all this in the first place

PS I didn't see 5:30 but I made 6am!

Don't Panic.....

All is well in the world of the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge, you will be pleased to know after yesterday's scary message. It seems they merely wanted my sister's name, so they could put us in the same team (they had split the application forms up and filed them alphabetically and as we now have different surnames....). So, gulp, it means I'd better get some more training underway, as things have gone a little astray just lately in that department. I'm even, gulp, thinking about getting up at 5:30 tomorrow to do some exercise before work. Yes, I know, I'm mad.......!

I Hope It's not bad news......

I received a message from Marie Curie re the Ben Nevis mountain climb, apparently there's a problem with my application, which doesn't bode well. Unfortunately they were closed by the time I picked up the message, so I will have to wait until tomorrow, to find out what the problem is. I think I will hang off booking my accommodation, until I speak to them!
PS Why do people leave messages at 5:10 to tell you that they're closing at 5:30, when they've had all day to ring???

Stop Press

I received a package yesterday at work - one of those really annoying ones that someone had sellotaped all the way round, so you couldn't get in it. I never usually receive anything interesting at work, so I got a little excited and then I managed to get into the parcel ........

I'm now the proud owner of a cap and t-shirt from my place of work, as well as receiving confirmation that they will cash match my Ben Nevis sponsorship and no I couldn't contain myself either when I saw what was inside the package!

Decisions, Decisions

I need to still buy walking gear for my Ben Nevis Mountain challenge on June 1st. The sensible person in me, knows that this is a priority, above anything else on my list.

My evil twin really wants me to spend the money driving this baby.
If I purchase the driving experience today, I get 20% off.
Mmmm, what would you do?

S-h-o-p-p-i-n-g

Captain Jack is currently guarding my purchases that I made this weekend, for my Ben Nevis climb. Unfortunately this is a small part of what I need, in order to be fully prepared for the climb on the 1st June. Whoever said the best things in life are free was definitely telling porkies!

I will be mostly eating this monster

Finishing off the forms for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge

Temptation

My training and eating healthy, in order to get fit for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge has gone slightly to pot this week. Partly because of my new found love for the battenburg and partly because it was my Grandad's funeral this week and my head has been a little all over the place. So I resolve that as from Monday, I will be back on track and super fit for the 1st June. You heard it here first!

I'm Busy .....

Filling in forms for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge, that I should have returned ages ago, but haven't got round to doing. Also the cash match application that goes to our Head Office for approval to match any funds raised. Why so many forms in life.....why?

Still Training.....

Training is still going well for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge. I've now lost 9lbs, which equates to losing one of my bellies, just two more to go...
I had a slight dilemma though today. I was hurrying to get changed for my lunch time run and turned round and found my pants floating in the toilet. Thankfully they were not the pants I should have been wearing, but a mere spare pair that had found their way into my training bag and in my haste to pull everything out, had gone for a swim. That could have been a very embarrassing afternoon at work....

Fundraising and Training - oh my!

I've entered week two of my training schedule for the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge this week. I'd love to say it's been easy, but I would be lying somewhat if I did! I'm still a long way off what I need to be, to do the trek comfortably, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day and I still have a few months yet! I've also been busy fundraising at work and have managed to raised £170 so far. My aim is to raise £500 and then I can get work to cash match it and hopefully raise £1000 in total. I've uploaded my fundraising page, so please, please, sponsor me, just press the link below and it couldn't be easier!

Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge

I'm filling out the forms for my Ben Nevis mountain challenge, which I have chosen to do for my 'sponsored hike for charity' section on my list. I'm feeling a little meloncholy as I chose this challenge to help raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care, a charity which helped support my cousin in his last days, before he died of cancer in October 2007. The sad thing is that I never really knew my cousin as an adult. Like most families we saw alot of each other as children, but then drifted apart as we got older. I'm so determined to complete this for him, just to say thanks for the wonderful memories I have of us growing up together.
